2 people hospitalized after wrong-way crash on I-480

Two people are in the hospital after a wrong-way crash on I-480 overnight.

The accident occurred around 12.30 near the State Highway.

The highway was restricted to a single lane overnight but was later reopened.

Cleveland EMS said the damage to both vehicles was so severe it was difficult to tell which vehicle was going the wrong way.

The 80-year-old woman, who was in serious condition, was transferred to Metro Hospital, and the 25-year-old woman, who was in critical condition, was transferred to Metro Hospital.

Just last week, a dozen highway ramps were marked to receive new wrong-way detection signs that flash when drivers enter from the wrong direction.

The area is part of Northeast Ohio’s “wrong road corridor” that stretches from West 154th to East 140th.

Wrong-way crashes are relatively rare but especially deadly, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation. As of last week, ODOT reported 70 wrong-way crashes in the state; 11 of these resulted in death and 18 in serious injuries.

“We definitely want to see a reduction and an increase in safety for all the motoring public in Northeast Ohio,” ODOT Region 12 spokesman Brent Kovacs said.

“Most of the time when we see wrong-way crashes, unfortunately they hit an innocent driver. So this is about improving safety for everyone involved.”
