Illegal gambling bust in Indian River County designed to lead by example

VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — While illegal arcade raids have become a common sight in 2023, this year they remained fewer and longer until Wednesday.

That’s when deputies from the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO) arrived at the Panda arcade, arrested the two men, and began seizing the slot machines. The suspects, identified as Jinquan Lin and Jing Guo Yang, were each arrested on charges of racketeering and illegal gambling. They each face million-dollar bonds.

The Vero Beach arcade, located just off US 1 and 8th Street, was raided Wednesday morning, and lawmakers and members of the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) were on hand as the slot machines were carted out. The investigation that led to the raid actually began more than a year ago.

“They were well aware that there had already been reports of illegal gambling,” said IRCSO Captain Joe Abollo. “We don’t want this stuff here. We don’t want this type of garbage here. We will not tolerate these types of arcades that bring poison to our society.”

Vero Beach police release video of suspect fleeing after Mulligan robbery

VERO BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — Surveillance footage has been released of a man fleeing the scene after being accused of robbing an employee at Mulligan’s Beach House.

The Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD) released surveillance video Monday after officers arrested Sederick Upton for the crime on Oct. 16.

According to the Vero Beach Police Department (VBPD), officers responded to Mulligan’s Beach House at 1025 Beachland Boulevard where one of its employees was the victim of a robbery. The victim told officers he was handling money from the business in a closed area when a black man wearing a mask broke into the office.

Officers said the suspect pointed his gun at the victim and made several threats while also demanding money. The officer alleged that the suspect tied the victim’s hands and feet with shoelaces and continued to make threats against the victim if he did not remain silent.

The suspect then stole approximately $4,900, a watch and a silver bracelet and fled the scene, police said.
