The Chicago Police Department provided an update on the incident at a press conference Saturday afternoon.

The Chicago Police Department provided an update on an officer-involved shooting in West Rogers Park on Saturday.

Chicago police said a 39-year-old victim was shot while walking in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue around 9:35 a.m. An armed attacker approached the victim from behind and shot him in the shoulder.

While the suspect escaped, surrounding neighbors immediately helped the victim, and police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

“It shows the kindness of the people in this neighborhood; they will stop by to help other people,” resident John Wong said. “That’s one of the things I love about this neighborhood.”

Around 9:55 a.m., the 23-year-old male gunman emerged from an alley and opened fire on officers and paramedics, police said.

It’s a nice residential area, but like other neighborhoods in Chicago, we noticed there was more crime.

Chicago police officials said the suspect continued to exchange gunfire with officers for about two minutes.

The gunman was shot multiple times by officers in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue, police said. Officers assisted the man and he was taken to a local hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition.

People living near the scene said such acts of violence have become very common in their neighborhoods.

“We like this neighborhood because it’s a nice residential area, but we’ve noticed that, like other neighborhoods in Chicago, there’s more of a criminal element,” Wong said. “Shootings and carjackings create more safety hazards.”

The 39-year-old victim was treated for a gunshot wound and released from the hospital, police said. The gender and identity of the victim are not yet known.

CPD said no officers or CFD members were injured in the incident.

Further information was not immediately available. CPD and COPA continue to investigate.
