Champa Khatun, a 25-year-old garment worker who was injured in a clash with law enforcement in Ashulia on October 23, died of his injuries this morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Confirming her death to The Business Standard, Dhaka Medical College Police Station Inspector Faruk said:

DMCH police station inspector Md Faquk said, “Shampa Khatun was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of the hospital after the injuries she received in the Ashulia clash. She died due to her injuries this morning.”

“His body was sent to the hospital morgue,” he added.

Champa, who hails from Rangpur, was working at Generation Next Fashions Ltd.

Ashulia Industrial Police Inspector Md Sarwar Alam also confirmed his passing away.

On October 23, a conflict broke out between Generation Next Fashions employees and law enforcement during a demonstration demanding overdue wages.

Other nearby factory workers also joined in the incidents of throwing bricks at various factories.

Initially, police responded with stun grenades and tear gas to disperse the crowd, but many workers, including Champa, were injured.

According to eyewitness and worker Md Shamim, while the workers had gathered peacefully near the factory before advancing towards Narsinghpur, the police attacked with tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring more than 40 people.

Champa’s death marks the second in recent unrest in the Ashulia industrial area, where garment workers have been pressing for unpaid dues and safety assurances.

Early on September 30, 27-year-old Kawsar Hossain Khan, operator of Mango Tex Limited, was shot dead during a protest in Ashulia industrial area.
