These sneakers are inspired by iconic Malaysian snacks

KUALA LUMPUR – Having previously released sneakers inspired by Malaysia’s most famous cultural icons such as nasi lemak, teh tarik and the Petronas Twin Towers, SneakerLah and Asics have brought their feet together once again for another collaboration.

This time they paid homage to the popular Mamee Monster, one of Malaysia’s most loved snacks.

According to a press release, the Asics Skyhand OG Mamee Monster sneaker is “a unique fusion of street style, nostalgia, and Malaysian culture, all wrapped in a design inspired by the iconic crispy noodle snack.”

This is the fourth collaboration between Malaysia’s largest sneaker event SneakerLah and Asics.

The first collaboration – the nasi lemak-inspired Gel-Kayano 5 OG Nasi Lemak – was released in 2019, and was followed in 2020 by another design inspired by the Petronas Twin Towers, known as the Gel-Lyte III Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers. And in 2022, the tarik-inspired Gel-Lyte III Teh Tarik sneaker was released.

According to SneakerLah founder Bryan Chin, the shoe’s design is inspired by childhood memories of enjoying Mamee Monster after school.

“I think it was the one snack that I bought and ate consistently from when I was a little kid, through adolescence and into adulthood,” he said in an email interview.

β€œIn many ways, this project (as well as past projects) is a selfish attempt to tell stories about my childhood; It describes how a snack (or a meal, or an iconic building) influenced my growth and the many fond memories I have. It’s been done over the years.”

This nostalgic moment is masterfully translated into the fun design of the sneaker.
