“Over the coming days investigators will map the site, examine the wreckage of both aircraft and recover all relevant components for further examination at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra,” an ATSB spokesman said.

“Investigators will also attempt to interview all witnesses and interested parties and gather relevant recorded information, including air traffic control and flight tracking data, as well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records and weather information.”

In addition to his tenure at Australia’s national airline, the 72-year-old also served in the Air Force and Navy.

“We are absolutely devastated beyond words and in complete shock at this tragic loss,” Mr Criddle’s family said in a statement.

“Gary, affectionately known as Gaz, was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather and airman.

“He mentored many aspiring pilots and was an enthusiastic adventurer with plans to sail around the world.

“Gaz was full of fun, laughter and generosity. “His loss is immeasurable and he will be greatly missed.”
