With the first major wave of AI development to transform business processes in industries worldwide, attention is now turning to creating devices that will allow ordinary users to see the benefits.

Having a supercomputer or data centers that perform big data analytics tasks or workloads is undoubtedly a blessing, but when will we see the devices in our homes and offices being able to make the most of AI?

As the world’s largest PC manufacturer, Lenovo is working hard to develop and produce this next generation of AI-powered devices, from smartphones to laptops; So how big of a difference can these really make?

“Today, you can do anything on a PC as long as you lean into the PC,” Lenovo PCs and Smart Devices CTO Daryl Cromer told me recently. Lenovo Technology World 2024 “Tomorrow the PC will bow to you” at the event in Seattle.

“It will amplify and complement the user’s strengths and weaknesses, and as it gets to know you by your personality, your strengths, your weaknesses, it will be able to adapt to that and learn your particular style to be much more personal.”

At Tech World 2024, Lenovo introduced the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 10 Aura Edition AI laptop, its latest innovation in this new device space. Cromer was keen to extoll the virtues of this impressive new device with cutting-edge features. Intel Hardware including NPU as well as massive 18-hour battery life.

“We’ve worked with Intel for a number of years, really tuning the experience,” he says. “This is going to be the foundation for AI computers and really define the experience with great computing, great battery life in an incredible form factor.”

The form factor is particularly important, he notes, given the demand for such a device that must perform high-intensity AI tasks while fitting into a handbag or backpack.

“The future will be AI-specific,” says Cromer. “These devices are designed for the AI age and designed with AI in mind.”

The company sees a recent prediction from Canalys that 50% of all computers will be AI computers by 2027 as achievable, but Cromer is keen to point out that success will not be immediate, with customer education on the potential of such devices key.

“Consumers will buy into a use case,” he says, highlighting how freelancers and content creators might be willing to use a device that enables a particular application or way of working, such as coding or video editing.

“15 years ago we would go (to consumers) and say a device has this driver or this processor, but those days are over; they want that experience, they want an incredibly beautiful design, a great screen, great communication, a great camera, but now they want additional experiences,” he adds, “ultimately they want to make their lives easier, whether they are consumers or professionals, so we need to find solutions and applications to do that.”

As computers with artificial intelligence become more common in offices and homes around the world, the technology will inevitably seep into cheaper devices.

Cromer argues that there will always be a demand and need for premium, higher-end devices, but wider adoption will be important for manufacturers such as Lenovo, which he says have a “huge opportunity” as the industry grows and evolves.

“The PC is your eyes, your ears, your window to the cloud, to this wonderful world of generative AI; at the end of the day,” he says, “it’s the perfect device for many applications.”

“Lenovo is one of the few companies that has phones, tablets, PCs, inner edge and cloud; it gives us the ability to move from our pocket to the cloud, and the ability to pivot between those devices puts us in a very unique position and gives us huge opportunities. Unique insights into what customers are looking for.” .
