Man who attacked his daughter was charged

Garnett Dockery was overcome with emotion as he described the events between him and his 23-year-old daughter that led to his daughter being arraigned after being accused of physically assaulting him.

Dockery appeared before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton in the St James District Court last Wednesday and pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 6.50pm on September 26, when Dockery and the complainant were at their home in the King Gate area of St James.

According to court documents, the complainant went to the kitchen to prepare dinner, returned to her room and locked the door.

While the defendant was in the room, he knocked on the door, came in and knocked his food over on the bed. He then hit her in the face before dragging her by her hair.

He asked: “What did I do? Why are you doing me like this?”

He then ran into the living room, followed her and hit her in the head, causing her to fall, then slammed her head on the floor and kicked her in the stomach.

The court also heard Dockery went into the kitchen and returned with a machete.

The complainant fled the home, fearing for her life, and Dockery locked the door and left her on the porch.

He eventually moved out to live with another relative.

Claiming to be a kidney patient who had suffered a stroke, Dockery made numerous complaints about her daughter; These included telling the judge that all he did was eat, smoke and drink.

“I actually took the plate away from him and he grabbed me and boxed me… He ripped my shirt and kicked me, so I pushed him onto the bed and started punching him because I felt like I was facing a monster. I had to do this; I had no choice. She was kicking and kicking the railing, so I grabbed her by the hair, dragged her, and pushed her into the hallway and then onto the porch. At that point he started yelling, ‘Murder, murder, murder, son of a bitch,’ so I locked the door,” the defendant told the court.

He said the complainant kicked the door so hard that it came off the hinges and the door had not yet been repaired.

The defendant father later reported the incident to the Hamsi police; but they could not find the complainant.

Dockery’s bail has been extended until November 6, when the cross-case is expected to be presented in court.

The person who attacked the municipal officer was sentenced to probation

A man accused of assaulting a municipal officer was sentenced to two years probation when he appeared in St James District Court last Wednesday.

Tafari Reid pleaded guilty to common law assault and common assault before presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton.

According to court documents, on Sept. 16 at approximately 12:42 p.m., the complainant was performing scheduled parking duties on Lower Union Street in Montego Bay when she noticed the defendant parked her car in an area where vending was prohibited. Despite a driver’s attempt to park, Reid refused to vacate the restricted area.

As the officer was about to take over the defendant’s car, the defendant pushed him and brandished the ratchet before approaching the officer. Police had to use pepper spray to deter the suspect.

Reid ran away, returned with the knife and attempted a second attack on the officer. However, the officer managed to grab an object from the car and threw it at the defendant, striking him in the chest without causing any injuries.

The matter was reported to the police and Reid cautiously said: “Officer, I’m telling you the truth, I’m going to go to court and tell it.”

Handing down the sentence, the judge said: “Mr Reid, you will be working with probation officers for the next two years. They will teach you how to manage your anger and how you can contribute positively to society. And I’m warning you that if you arrive before me, you won’t like it.
