Man dies after police standoff in Fairfield

A police standoff in Fairfield resulted in the suspect’s death following a Friday evening shooting, police said.

Police responded to the 2800 block of Elmhurst Circle for calls of a disturbance in the area. There, they learned that a 58-year-old resident had harmed family members, damaged the exterior of the home, and threatened to burn the house down.

A man and woman, relatives of the suspect, managed to escape to a neighbor’s house. Police said callers reported the suspect was armed with a shotgun in front of the home, had other weapons inside the home and was threatening to harm others.

The man then retreated to the home while officers prepared a de-escalation plan, police said. There, he allegedly pointed a gun from a second-story window. A police officer then shot and killed the suspect.

Police said the suspect retreated to the home and SWAT took over the scene.

The teams found the person dead at home. The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear.

Family members who were with the man were taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries allegedly caused by their relative. Authorities did not disclose the extent of injuries.

No police officers were injured in the shooting.
