(WXMI) — An annual tradition is back. Today is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), this is a day used to encourage the public to remove unnecessary medications from their homes in order to prevent drug abuse and opioid addiction.

It’s a simple process.

Look in your medicine cabinet, drawers, or wherever you find those old, expired, or unwanted prescription medications. When it comes to disposing of them, there are many options in West Michigan.

Priority Health shared some locations in West Michigan that are open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

• Kent County Health Department: 700 Fuller Ave. NE, Grand Rapids
• Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals Care Center: Cutlerville 80 68th St., Grand Rapids
• Priority Health: 3111 Leonard St. NE, Grand Rapids

East Grand Rapids Public Health is also hosting an open house today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its location at 770 Lakeside Drive SE. Drop-offs will be between 10:00 – 14:00 in the lobby, except
Meijer stores are also participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

It said anyone, customer or not, could drop off unwanted medications at “easily identifiable” kiosks near each in-store pharmacy. Meijer has already collected nearly 200 tons of unnecessary medications in its kiosks over the years.

However, some products are not accepted. These include: needles or other sharp objects, inhalers, mercury thermometers, iodine-containing medications, and illegal drugs.

Meijer Pharamcy hours vary by location, so it’s important to check before you head out the door.

There are probably other local options for you; these often include local law enforcement and national pharmacy chains.
