Marc Marquez on Thailand MotoGP sprint: ‘I didn’t trust Bastianini’ | MotoGP

Marc Marquez says he “expects” to finish third in the MotoGP Thailand Grand Prix sprint but “doesn’t trust” Enea Bastianini’s pace to win the race.

The Gresini driver finished fifth after a crash in the second quarter, but managed to run with the leaders and enter the fight for the podium.

“In the race it was the opposite; he was super fast, super consistent.

“Then we finished the race in fourth place. It’s true that by taking more risks, maybe we could have finished fourth, but closer to that. But I saw that that position was my position and we will try to repeat it tomorrow.”

Marquez said he needed a “perfect” race on Sunday to take the final spot on the podium, especially given he had lost so much to the GP24s in the first two sectors.

“No, even on the hard tyres, I think our aim is to try to get fourth place and if we have a great race, try to get third place.”

“But here in T1, T2 we lose a lot and we can’t… So I can make up five laps but in the sprint race I saw that if I keep driving like this I will crash.

“Then sometimes you have to understand these things. “You can always make a mistake, but (I) will try to avoid it.”

The Gresini driver almost got into a fight with Jorge Martin at the exit of the first corner after the championship leader went off the track to take the lead.
