UWI dormitory logbook disappears; Matthew Hyde returns to court on November 8

Records of those entering and exiting George Alleyne Hall at the University of the West Indies in Mona between Monday, February 6, and Thursday, February 9 – have been requested by the legal team representing Matthew Hyde, who has pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-wife. In 2023, his girlfriend cannot be found in his dorm room.

The statement was made by the prosecution on Friday, as the prosecution began its sentencing drive for Hyde, who pleaded guilty to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, malicious communication and false imprisonment in September this year.

Prosecutors on Friday said Hyde had all but those records in his file; these included a completed social investigation report, previous report, and psychiatric evaluation report.

Hyde, through his lawyer Patrick Peterkin, had requested from the University of the West Indies records relating to sign-ins and sign-outs at the hall between February 6 and February 9, when his ex-girlfriend was reportedly imprisoned by police. young man

“Checks were carried out on my instructions and they did not find them, so this will not be possible,” a prosecutor told the court when the matter was heard on Friday.

Hyde’s attorney briefly addressed the court, saying the defense would not call any other witnesses on Hyde’s behalf before sentencing.

However, the case was adjourned until 8 November by High Court judge Justice Leighton Pusey because the incumbent judge, Justice Carolyn Tie-Powell, was unwell and unable to preside over the hearing.

Hyde allegedly kept his ex-girlfriend against her will for at least three days in his room down the hall, during which time he beat her repeatedly and burned her all over her body with an iron.

He was later rescued after he managed to communicate his distress using a device. A report was made to the police and Hyde was arrested and charged. Following a committal hearing in Half-Way-Tree District Court in June 2023, the matter was transferred to the House Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.
