Question 7: Voter ID

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – With less than two weeks until the 2024 election, we take a look at Question 7.

The question asks whether voters must present photo identification to verify their identity when voting in person or submit certain personal information to verify their identity when voting by mail.

The initiative would amend Article 2 of the Nevada Constitution to require voters to show identification before receiving their ballot.

If voting in person, the voter will need to present an identification document that is valid or has not expired for more than four years. If the voter is over 70 years of age, the identity document can be valid for any period of time as long as it is valid.

Acceptable forms of identification include:

  • Nevada driver’s license.
  • Identification card issued by the State of Nevada, any other State, or the U.S. Government.
  • Employee photo identification card issued by the U.S. government, the government of Nevada, or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other Nevada government agency.
  • US passport.
  • US military ID card
  • Student photo identification card issued by a Nevada public college, university or technical school
  • Tribal photo ID
  • Nevada concealed firearm permit
  • Other types of government-issued photo identification that the Legislature may approve.

Those who vote by mail must include certain information so election officials can use that information to verify the voter’s identity. This includes:

  • The last four digits of the Nevada driver’s license number.
  • Last four digits of Social Security number if the voter does not have a Nevada driver’s license.
  • If the voter does not have a Nevada driver’s license or Social Security number, the number assigned by the county clerk when the voter registers to vote.
