Report details alleged assault involving Berkeley County judge

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – An incident report provided by the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office shed light on why a county judge is investigating an alleged assault on an Uber driver.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating Berkeley County Magistrate Judge Martin Housand for the incident after the sheriff requested to take over on Sept. 30.

No charges have been filed against Housand at this time.

According to the report, it all started in front of Housand’s house on September 27. The rideshare driver told deputies that St. An Uber ride was requested from the home in St. Stephen, he said.

The driver picked up the passenger, identified as Housand’s daughter, and as she attempted to leave, she was stopped by a man identified as Housand.

When Housand reached the window, the driver rolled down the window and Housand asked what he was doing. He told deputies that the driver came to pick up a passenger and then showed Housand driving directions.

Housand reportedly said that wasn’t a good answer and the driver told him he should back up. Housand refused and grabbed the driver’s face.

“…captured near her eyes and mouth, as well as her nose,” the report states.

They then drove away and called 911. When the driver met with a deputy, the deputy was able to detect that the driver had a fresh cut on the inside of his nose.

Housand’s daughter, who was sitting in the driver’s backseat, told deputies that she could not see whether her father made contact with the driver’s face because of his position in the back.

However, he saw Housand asking the driver questions and reaching into the vehicle.

The girl also said her boyfriend called an Uber to take her to her grandmother’s house. According to the report, his family was angry with him because of what was happening in his private life.
