MAGA hat-wearing voter attacks Bexar County poll worker

A 63-year-old man was arrested for assaulting a 69-year-old Bexar County election worker at the Johnston Library polling place Thursday night.

Deputies arrested Jesse Lutzenberger at his home shortly after the incident.

A sheriff’s report noted Lutzenberger was wearing a red “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) baseball cap at the polling place. An election official asked him to remove it, and Lutzenberger complied.

Under Texas law, it is illegal to wear or display any campaign or party materials at a polling place.

Lutzenberger put his hat back on as he left the polling area, according to the report.

The election official asked him to remove it again. Lutzenbeger hit the worker in the chest and face with his fists and then left the scene.

The worker, who was treated in the emergency room, was discharged.

Lutzenberger was sent to Bexar County Jail. He was accused of assaulting an elderly person.

Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen held a press conference Friday. There were sheriff’s deputies on both sides of him.

TPR asked her if election workers had been subject to threats and if she and others in the elections department felt safe. “We have very experienced people among us. This is definitely different,” Callanen said. “People are feeling the stress.”
