Lack of in-person retail options frustrates Yankee fans scrambling for World Series merchandise

BRONX (WABC) — Yankees fans are hunting for World Series gear in the Bronx.

While fans eagerly anticipated Monday’s game in the Bronx, they were disappointed by the lack of retail options for World Series merchandise, saying online shopping wasn’t an option because the equipment wouldn’t get to them in time.

Fans can’t help but remember how convenient Modell’s sporting goods store once was.

Now fans have to make a special trip to the Bronx to pick up their World Series gear before first pitch on Monday.

“Season ticket holder – pretty legit front row, right field, right next to Soto. We got an order for Yankees World Series hats,” said fan Austin Capobianco.

Hats and Juan Soto jerseys are bestsellers.

“This is what we wanted, we have been waiting for 15 years and now we finally got it,” said Ballpark Sports Stores Manager Yousef Abbadi.

Yankees fan Kevin Torpie and his son descended from Mount Kisco to the Bronx.

“We were getting bacon, eggs and cheese this morning — I was telling the kids we were going to Yankee Stadium, let me know if you want a hat — and they said the same thing, like you know that’s too much It was nicer to have Modell’s across the street,” Torpie said.

Fans noticed the famous Modell’s song and expressed wish the sporting goods store was still around for quick access to World Series equipment.

“I wish Modell’s was open right now,” one fan said on social media.

The store went bankrupt and closed in 2020.

“All I want to do is go to Modell’s, but I can’t.” One fan said this on social media.

But that doesn’t mean business isn’t booming on River Avenue.

“It’s crazy. This is like opening day again.” Abbadi said:

Fans said they did not shop online for autograph jerseys.

“If you order online until it shows up, the World Series is over.”

Fans race towards the stadium store and surrounding stores.

“If you’re a real fan, you should go to the stadium,” Jeanette Lozada said.

They say they’ll pick up their belongings now before things get busy in the Bronx on Monday.

“Pure chaos and looks like it’s gone by now. But hopefully we can work something out,” another fan said.
