BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – The Senior Olympian who gained national fame by breaking records in the 100-meter dash has died at the age of 108.

Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins performed at St. Paul’s in Baton Rouge on Tuesday evening. He died at the James Place care facility. Lawyer.

In 2017, at the age of 101, Hawkins earned her nickname as the oldest woman to compete in the National Senior Games 50- and 100-meter dash events; he would break these records just two years later.

In 2019, at age 105, he set a new world and U.S. record in the 100-meter race at the Louisiana Senior Games in Hammond. She is the first woman and first American to break the Masters Track and Field World Record in the 105+ Age Division.

Hawkins’ time was 1:02:95.

She began running competitively in 2016 when her four children signed up for the Louisiana Senior Games, the Advocate reported. He had previously participated in cycling races in his 70s.

Born and raised in Ponchatula, she attended LSU, where she met her future husband, Murray Hawkins, during her freshman year. He continued to teach at LSU and lead the petroleum engineering department. She eventually quit her career to raise her children.

Funeral arrangements for Hawkins have not yet been announced.
