FAIRFAX, Va. – Many conflicts are heating up in the region in the final weeks before Election Day. In Virginia, Democratic incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine faces Republican challenger Hung Cao in the race for a senate seat.

Kaine is a two-time senator from the state and is running for a third term. Kaine also previously served as the former governor of Virginia and former running mate of Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

This is where Kaine focuses on five important issues.

Economy

Kaine is an advocate for expanding infrastructure and manufacturing in Virginia. Kaine also supports tax cuts for low- and middle-income families and veteran and military families.

“I’m running a campaign that focuses on the economy as the primary issue,” Kaine said in a recent interview on The Final 5.

healthcare

During this year’s election season, Democrats campaigned hard to preserve the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in lieu of a potential Trump administration. The ACA increases health insurance coverage for the uninsured and implements provisions for the health insurance market.

“I was the deciding vote several years ago to save the Affordable Care Act. Hundreds of thousands of Virginians were protected from discrimination against preexisting conditions for the first time in their lives — and all Virginians were protected from discrimination against pre-existing conditions,” Kaine said.

Kaine is in favor of supporting access to healthcare. Introduced the Medicare-X Choice Act in Congress. The bill would allow patients to choose between private and public insurance.

Reproductive Rights

Virginia is considering the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Roe v. It is the southernmost state that has not yet broadly banned or restricted access to abortion following its decision to overturn the Wade case.

Current state laws prohibit access after the 26th week of pregnancy. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has called for a ban on access after the 15th week of pregnancy. Democrats, who control both Virginia legislatures, dropped that plan.

Kaine opposes abortion ban. He is the sponsor of the Reproductive Freedom for All Act. The bipartisan bill, Roe v. It would codify the protections in the Wade case into legal protections at the federal level.

Immigration

Virginia is home to nearly one million immigrants, who make up 13% of the state’s population and approximately 17% of Virginia’s workforce. When it came to reform, Kaine advocated for enforcement of borders while supporting legal immigration.

According to Kaine’s campaign, he favors protecting people with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) who are living in the United States after being displaced from their home countries. Kaine co-sponsored legislation that would allow TPS recipients to reside in the United States and called for TPS designation for countries experiencing humanitarian crises.

Foreign policy

Kaine condemned the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 and advocated for more aid.

“I have always voted to help Israel. We have given Israel more aid than any other nation in the world. I helped President Obama – encouraging him to renegotiate a decade-old defense. And I helped whip up the $14 billion in votes passed in April “The aid package we provided”
Kaine said.

Kaine is in favor of prioritizing the delivery of defensive weapons to Israel rather than offensive weapons.

“Frankly, I think assault weapons in this area add more gunpowder to the kindling keg and will probably lead to a bad outcome,” Kaine said.
