Researchers examined the graves of thousands of wealthy non-elites. They were buried in a complex in Xian, the capital of the Tang dynasty. Scientists have found that cosmetics from this period were made from moths, animal fats, and vegetable oils, among others.

The main purpose of animal fat was as a moisturizing agent. The use of vegetable oil in new graves showed how advanced makeup was. Vegetable oil was added to facilitate the application of moisturizers.
