West Country Carnival growing in popularity, says club

West country carnival rides are an annual celebration usually held around bonfire night and date back to the gunpowder plot of 1605.

Carnival clubs in the area prepare horse-drawn carriages for parades all year round; Some of these are elaborate and cost thousands of pounds to make.

The UK’s oldest carnival is celebrated in Bridgwater, which is also one of the largest floodlit parades in Europe.

Organizers estimate that Bridgwater alone generated around £4 million into the local economy.

“It makes the town so lively,” said carnival contestant Paul Savage.

“I was born and raised here, there are many families here who have been involved in the carnival for several years and their children and their children also participate,” he added.

The carnival procession begins in September and continues until Bonfire Night on November 5.
