Crews battle a massive fire at a solar farm in Castleton

The fire broke out Saturday afternoon while a red flag warning was in effect.

A massive fire broke out at a solar farm in Castleton following red flag warnings in effect on Saturday.

Crews said most of the farm’s more than 17,000 solar panels and 38 acres of land burned.

Rensselaer County Public Safety Director Jay Wilson said about 15 fire departments responded to the blaze with about 80 firefighters on scene.

“There is a valley between the two parts of the solar farm where all the trees, everything, were cut down and thrown into the valley. So the fire is deeply rooted there. But we’re handling it well,” Wilson said.

A firefighter told us that they had to use an ATV to get to the valley because it was impossible for fire trucks to get there.

The solar farm is called White River Solar Farm and is owned by Pure Sky Energy. A firefighter said the company arrived at the farm when the fire started and was able to shut off the power.
