Sonic Eyes restaurant in Fredonia | News, Sports, Jobs

The Sonic fast food restaurant chain is reportedly planning a restaurant in Fredonia.

“Sonic rolled out its site plan package (this week). “It will be on the November Planning Board (agenda).” Charles LaBarbera, Fredonia’s chief of law enforcement, said at the Fredonia Board of Trustees workshop.

The restaurant’s site will be on Route 60, which is currently part of the Lucky Lanes parking lot. It is adjacent to the corridor Brooks-TLC plans to use for Route 60 access to the new hospital it will build on nearby East Main Street.

“I don’t know how this will affect Sonic being there right now.” said LaBarbera. Mayor Michael Ferguson replied: “The hospital is aware of Sonic’s plans.”

“This is more of a takeaway, there will be no seating there.” said LaBarbera.

If it happens, Sonic’s new location would be the second recent addition to a national fast food chain’s Route 60 business. A Popeye’s restaurant located north on Route 60 near the Thruway exit is currently under construction. It is reportedly scheduled to open around Thanksgiving. The building’s framework appears to be essentially complete, with final touches needed before it opens.

The Sonic chain is famous for delivering food to carts on roller skates. Founded in Oklahoma in the 1950s, the chain has more than 3,500 restaurants across the U.S.

The company is just starting to penetrate Western New York. Sonics opened in Buffalo and Cheektowaga a few years ago. A third branch is coming to Niagara Falls.
