Yankees’ Aaron Judge fumbles in big spot as October woes continue in World Series

LOS ANGELES — Aaron Judge has the perfect opportunity to change his playoff reputation.

This came after Juan Soto intentionally walked Gleyber Torres at second and with two outs in the top of the ninth inning in Game 1 of the World Series.

But Dave Roberts brought in Blake Treinen and the Dodgers had Judge hit short to end the threat and keep the game tied. In the game that the Dodgers won 6-3. With Freddie Freeman’s 10th grand slam.

It was the latest disappointment for Judge, the out-of-this-world player who has failed to make the playoffs for most of his career.

And the first World Series game of his career was very similar to his previous October performances.

He pitched his first three at-bats against right-hander Jack Flaherty, twice with Soto at first base and the Yankees trying to mount a rally.

Judge was able to hit a single to center with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, but was stranded when Giancarlo Stanton struck out.

The center fielder entered the World Series going 5-for-31 with 13 strikeouts this postseason; but with a pair of homers.

But once again against the Dodgers, Judge put his stellar regular-season performance behind him as his 58-home run will surely earn him another AL MVP award.

As for the playoffs, Hakim has been at a loss for some time.

In 37 postseason games since going deep in three consecutive games against the A’s and Red Sox in the 2018 playoffs, Judge entered Friday hitting 25-for-142 with 50 strikeouts and an ugly .634 OPS .

It’s not much better than the .558 OPS that Dave Winfield put up in 14 games in the 1981 postseason; His only playoff game with the Yankees earned him the nickname “Mr.” May” by George Steinbrenner.

Winfield was on the field before Friday’s game, now known for his well-rounded Hall of Fame career.

The referee still has time to change his playoff legacy, but it didn’t help on Friday. The Yankees cruised through the first two innings without much help from him, but they couldn’t make it in this game.

Judge said earlier in the week: “The journey is always challenging but that’s the fun in it all.” “There have been good times and bad times, but when it comes to this point, that’s where the fun begins. For years as a kid, I would watch the Yankees win and play in the World Series. That excitement, that emotion, the city comes alive. This is special. “I look forward to doing that with this group.”
