Local roofing company talks about fireproofing home during Red Flag Alert

JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) – Warm breezes in East County bring a red flag warning.

“We get a lot of calls to make sure homes are properly prepared for embers to arrive,” says Riley Logsdon, Dana Logsdon Roofing & Solar.

The most important thing for homeowners is to make sure the ventilation system in your home doesn’t pick up any potential embers, Logdson said.

“Because the ventilation system sucks in all the cold air along with the entrance of the vent. And when there are embers in the air, it can be extremely dangerous without proper shielding over the vents to keep the embers from getting in,” Logdson said.

Shields like this stop pesky fiery particles that can get into the attic and spark the insulation.

“What you can do is they either have special vents that are retrofitted into existing vents, or they have new vents that you can use that will actually prevent embers from getting in. They have a Class A fire rating,” Logdson said.

Cal Fire said most of the homes destroyed in the fires were burned with embers.

“The column of smoke that rises into the air as the fire moves is convective heat. This lifts smoke, heat and embers into the air, and with that there is a mix of wind. Thus, it can carry these embers quite far. Sometimes we could see as far as a quarter mile,” Capt. Mike Cornette, Cal Fire San Diego

Cal Fire also said to clean your gutters and clear your roof of anything that could catch fire.

Logsdon told me that to make your vents fireproof you’ll have to do it yourself, he doesn’t recommend messing around with any tools on your roof. Leave that to the professionals.

“When it comes to entry holes on the outside of the vents, there are DIY things you can do, like buy shielding from Home Depot and do it yourself,” Logdson said.
