Proposal 139 sanctifies access to abortion

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Arizona Proposition 139 has been passed, expanding abortion access in Arizona by being included in the state constitution. Currently, there is a 15-week abortion ban in the constitution. The support will allow abortion until fetal viability, which is approximately 24 weeks of pregnancy.

“This means that every individual in the state has the fundamental right to an abortion, and the state of Arizona cannot interfere with that before the fetus is viable,” said Lupe Rodríguez, Executive Director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice.

More than 61 percent of the public voted in favor of the proposal. The group “Arizona for Abortion Access” says it is pleased with the decision.

“Because this is a constitutional amendment, Arizona, women, families and providers now know that this care is sacred and reliable,” said Dawn Penich, Communications Director for Abortion Access Arizona.

The organization “Going Too Far” opposes the prop transition. They published a statement as follows:

“Today begins a dangerous time for girls and women, putting Arizona on par with California when it comes to unlimited and unfettered abortion law, not because Arizonans are radical on abortion, but because their advocates bombard them with lies, manipulate and hold them back through fear. critical details.”

“Arizona for Abortion Access” shares how this support will impact healthcare providers.

“They can treat their patients as required by their expertise without having to worry about going to jail just for doing what they know is medically necessary,” said Dawn Penich, Communications Director for Abortion Access Arizona.

The opposition “Going Too Far” group concluded its statement with what it sees for Arizona’s future once the support passes:

“The fight against extreme abortion laws will continue. Knowing the harms of unrestricted abortion, Arizonans will never stop telling the truth about abortion or working for real health care for women and the protection of unborn babies.

Phoenix, AZ – “Today begins a dangerous time for girls and women, putting Arizona on par with California when it comes to unlimited and unrestricted abortion legislation. Not because Arizonans are radical on abortion, but because their advocates are bombarding them with lies, manipulating them.” He was afraid and withheld critical details.

The passage of Proposition 139 came after a $35 million deception campaign that boldly lied to voters about current abortion law and care for pregnancy complications. Goes Too Far Campaign Manager Leisa Brug puts the blame unquestionably on lies: “Supporters have repeatedly told Arizona voters that abortion is illegal and that women must be on the verge of death before doctors can treat miscarriage or late-term complications. The truth is that none of this is true; Many voters were deceived.”

It Goes Too Far, and despite warnings from allies, advocates’ misinformation went unchallenged and did a huge disservice to voters who would have voted No if they knew the truth: Abortion is already legal in Arizona, and state laws already protect miscarriage and late-term crises from complications that threaten a woman’s health.

Brug noted: “Supporters built their campaign on lies and avoided any real pushback. They can no longer claim that Proposition 139 passed for any reason other than what they told voters, which was completely false.”

Brug went on to praise the massive grassroots effort to inform voters about the dangers of Proposition 139 to girls, women, and the unborn: “I have never seen such a motivated, strong, and committed base of volunteers tirelessly bringing the facts to voters and their support for women’s health and safety.” Brug continued: “Girls will be left alone with abortion at their own hands, without the supervision and reassurance of medical doctors, without the knowledge and guidance of their parents, and unaware of the risks involved.” “And I’m saddened by the many senseless abortions to come, especially after the fetus can survive outside the womb.”

The fight against extreme abortion laws will continue. Knowing the harms of unrestricted abortion, Arizonans will never stop telling the truth about abortion or working to ensure real health care for women and the protection of unborn babies.”
