Mother demands change after being hit at age 11 while waiting for school bus near ditch in Fort Bend County

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A mother is demanding change after her 11-year-old child was injured while waiting for his bus in Fort Bend County.

The bus stop is located in a ditch near highways 6 and 521 in Fresno with no sidewalks nearby.

On October 23, all the children were at the bus stop to catch the bus.

“The truck was coming this way, the car was coming this way,” Kelly Johnson said. “When the truck hit the car, it rolled over and landed in the ditch. In the process, it knocked over the sign and hit my daughter.”

Johnson’s daughter Zariah remained in the hospital for three days.

He still has multiple fractures and a cast on his arm.

“I don’t want another parent to go through what my family went through because it’s really hard,” Johnson said. “What if my daughter had died? How long would it take? For someone to die? I want the safety of all children to be ensured.”

When Johnson said he wasn’t getting an answer, ABC13 called the area on his behalf.

District officials now say they will change the bus route next week to ensure the safety of students.

Eyewitness News is still awaiting details on these changes.

“I want the city to do something. I want the county to do something,” Johnson said. “We’re here to protect our children, and if that’s what it takes, how far do I have to go to make my voice heard?”
