Man accused of nearly strangling a DCS worker to death in Mesa arrested

MESA, AZ — A DCS worker is out of the hospital after nearly drowning to death while on the job.

The suspect, identified as De’Andre Johnson, was arrested and faces four charges, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Mesa Tower near Southern Avenue and Alma School Road.

According to the Mesa Police Department, Johnson choked the DCS employee for two and a half minutes.

The employee was working on a case involving Johnson’s daughter.

The crime was livestreamed on Johnson’s social media. ABC15 reviewed video that shows the victim interviewing Johnson in the lobby of the Mesa Tower for nearly an hour.

At one point, the two argue about whether Johnson’s children were physically abused or neglected, but the employee says he doesn’t expect the case to go any further.

Still… after the two finish talking, Johnson asks the DCS employee to “take a hit on him.” The two punches collide and then Johnson charges.

Johnson was heard repeatedly saying the worker was a “dead man.”

In another livestream of Johnson reviewed by ABC15, Johnson says that while he was at his daughter’s school, after being interviewed in the school auditorium, he wanted to know why her daughter didn’t want to come to school anymore.

He is heard on camera saying that school staff “didn’t think it was their job to tell me when my daughter was going to enter a room.” Like this. The door is blocked by a man and they can’t tell me what happened. And now my daughter doesn’t want to go back to school. We have problems. Today you will get to know me.”

Police told Johnson at the time that DCS had the opportunity to interview her child.

Johnson was convicted of aggravated assault in 2017, according to court records.

DCS released the following statement to ABC15 regarding the incident:
