Elwood Edwards, who voiced AOL’s ‘You’ve Got Mail’ greeting, dies at 74

(CNN) – Elwood Edwards, the voice of AOL’s iconic greeting “You’ve Got Mail,” has died at the age of 74.

More than 30 years ago, Edwards recorded four iconic lines for America Online, a little-known company at the time.

The four phrases were “Welcome,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Files Completed,” and “Goodbye.”

Eventually these words would be heard by hundreds of millions of people and become a key part of the AOL experience, catapulting Edwards’ voice to worldwide fame.

Years later, any former AOL user can probably still recognize his voice.

Edwards reportedly died after battling a long illness.
