Bruins Freshman WR Made an Impact Early in His Career

UCLA Bruins (3-5) true freshman wide receiver Kwazi Gilmer had a career-high performance in last week’s road win against Nebraska. He will be tested once again this week at home when the Bruins take on the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-3).

Gilmer recorded three catches for 88 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown pass in last week’s win. That performance earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, and he looks to repeat that type of success at home this Friday night.

The Bruins’ offense struggled greatly early in the season, averaging just 14.5 points per game to start the season 1-5. They have since won two straight Big Ten contests and averaged 31 points in that span. Gilmer talked about the offensive improvement.

“I think we’re all starting to understand the offense and get used to it,” Gilmer said. “Before, everyone was playing football, we were like, ‘Okay, we can’t mess this up, we can’t do this wrong’, but now we just play football, have fun. I think the best part of football is playing football.” “You have fun and you put in the effort and you give it your all, so you go out there and make plays.”

The Sierra Canyon High School graduate was asked about the progress this team has made over the past few weeks and how the group’s confidence level has increased. gilmer He was an example of newfound confidence and believed in his men from the beginning of fall camp.

“I knew from day one that we could be great,” Gilmer said. “I guess we didn’t put all the pieces together. So we have to show up with the same energy. We can’t change anything, let’s just show up with some energy and stay balanced.”

The Bruins have three wins this season, all on the road. They have yet to win at home this season, and Gilmer was asked on Homecoming what it would mean to win it in front of the home crowd.

“That’s all we want, man; we want to show the fans what we’ve got,” Gilmer said. “We can’t let people come to our house and take what’s ours. So a home game (win) would be the best.”

If the Bruins find a way to upset the Hawkeyes on Homecoming this Friday, Gilmer will be a crucial part of it. The freshman Bruin has all the tools to become a dangerous daily threat in any offensive tackle in the country. He’ll have another opportunity to shine at home this weekend.
