What Can the Spartans Do to Get Back to .500?

Michigan State will look to get back to its winning ways after losing its last two games and falling below the .500 mark when it faces Illinois on the road on Nov. 16.

Despite their recent loss to an Indiana Hoosiers team that improved their record to 9-0, the Spartans cannot focus on the loss but will focus on what they can improve on in the very near future.

In the last game, Michigan State literally put on a dominant performance and ultimately lost 47-10. In the loss, the team recorded 193 yards on 229 passing yards, an average of 3.0 yards per play. Looking back, the main focus is on improving the team’s offensive play. The team’s total rushing distance against Indiana was -36.

The Spartans had more offensive numbers than their opponents in all four matches they won this season. The team, as expected, had more success when it was able to execute both forms of offense, but another piece of the puzzle for the Spartans to prevail in the 16th is their defense.

Despite scoring more than 24 points this season, the Spartans failed to win. While their opponents scored an average of 32.6 points against them in the five games they lost, Michigan State lost with an average of 12.6 points.

Michigan State running backs Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams and Nate Carter are the only two Spartans with 400-plus receiving yards on the year. If the Spartans try to change course of action after the defeat, their main priority will be defense.

This team has strong defensive components; Like linebacker Jordan Turner leading the team with 51 total tackles. Other notable players on defense through nine games so far this season are linebacker Malik Spencer and linebacker Cal Haladay, who both have over 40 tackles.

With Illinois in the spotlight, Michigan State will begin to chase that equal record as long as it does what needs to be done in terms of both defensive pressure and offensive play execution.
