Russell Westbrook sends a bold message to OKC Thunder

If there’s anyone who knows how to spot a championship contender, it’s Russell Westbrook. The future Hall-of-Famer has been a part of one for nearly his entire career. There are deep dreams of a playoff race everywhere he goes.

Westbrook spent his first 11 seasons playing the leading role. Oklahoma City Thunder. Deep playoff run after deep playoff run, the former MVP winner knew what it was like to be on one of the league’s best rosters.

Which makes his comments after the Thunder’s first loss interesting. Denver Nuggets Ends OKC’s historic 7-0 start to the year close the contest. With Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon out of the game, the 35-year-old player played with 29 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.

Following the win, Westbrook stated that he believed both teams would be better than the Thunder despite their early-season records. OKC 7-1 and Denver 5-3.

“They have the best record right now, but I feel like we have the better team and we showed that tonight,” Westbrook said.

This could be the first spark of a rivalry between the Thunder and Nuggets. There was no real off-field drama between the two teams as they battled for first place last season. But considering OKC’s rapid rise and Denver’s slow decline, Westbrook’s words opened the door between the two teams.

How poetic would that be?

There was nothing over the top that Westbrook said. The Nuggets might have a reasonable argument to be the better team against the Thunder due to their history and the presence of Nikola Jokic. But these discussions are often left to the fan bases. Hearing a statement from a real player who has caught the Thunder’s attention.

If both teams match in the play-offs, it will be an exciting series. The Thunder and Nuggets have produced classic after classic in most of their contests over the last two seasons.
