Brie cheese sold out at Aldi, other stores recalled due to Listeria concerns

Several different types of Brie cheese sold in various states of the United States, recalled US health officials announced that concerns have increased due to possible Listeria concerns.

Savencia Cheese USA Announced voluntary recall on Saturday It involves six different types of soft-ripened cheese produced at the company’s Lena, Illinois facility. Brand names include “Aldi, La Bonne Vie and others,” an announcement said.

A separate announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said routine testing determined that processing equipment at the site may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause foodborne bacterial illness.

Listeria infection can be fatal for older Americans, pregnant women, and consumers with compromised immune systems. People with Listeriosis may experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes followed by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

In the FDA’s announcement, it was stated that no contaminated products were found in “finished product tests”, but a voluntary recall was initiated for potentially affected cheeses in stores.

The cheeses had “limited regional distribution” in the U.S., according to the FDA.

“A small number of retailers who purchased the product have been informed of this possible contamination and are in the process of removing the products from shelves,” the agency’s announcement said.

One of the affected cheese products, Emporium Selection Brie Soft Aged Cheese, was sold at select Aldi stores in six states: Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri.

Aldi said in a statement that it “puts the safety and integrity of the products it sells first.”

“If customers have products affected by this recall, they are encouraged to discard them immediately or return them to their local store for a full refund,” the company added in a press release.

According to the FDA, as of November 4, there have been no confirmed reports of health problems related to the recalled products.
