Teacher, nurse and driver among 14 people arrested for illegal street racing in Hong Kong

A primary school teacher, a nurse and a professional driver were among 14 people arrested for illegal street racing in Hong Kong as police tightened enforcement ahead of the annual Macau Grand Prix.

The operation, which spanned the last two months, resulted in the seizure of 14 vehicles to check for potential illegal modifications.

According to police, some cars were recorded traveling at speeds of up to 135 km/h (84 mph) on narrow, winding sections with a speed limit of 50 km/h, while repeatedly crossing the double white lines on bends on Route Twisk.

14 men, aged between 20 and 33, were detained for illegal racing and driving without third-party insurance. Among them were a primary school teacher, a nurse and a professional driver. They were all released on bail and asked to report to police later this month.

“The police would like to take this opportunity to strongly reprimand these drivers. These illegal racing activities not only endanger other road users, but are also a major factor behind serious accidents,” said Chief Inspector Charles Ng Hing-cheong of the New Territories North traffic unit.
