New England warming trend continues but slightly cooler through Thursday

New Englanders I felt the heat yesterdayWith dozens of cities and communities in the Southern and Central New England environment new daily high records Afternoon highs reached the upper 70s and low 80s.

Boston, Norwood, Providence, Fitchburg, Westfield, Springfield, Hartford, Concord, NH, Manchester, NH, and Portland easily surpassed previous records for the day when the strong southwest flow saw significantly more sunlight than clouds. Yesterday’s high temperature of 82 degrees for Boston marked the last day of the year when the temperature reached 80 degrees or above.

The pendulum will begin to swing in the opposite direction today, and the first of two cold fronts will eventually bring temperatures back to seasonal normals. Although Boston and much of Southern New England will still see temperatures about 10 degrees warmer than average this afternoon, the weather will be noticeably colder than yesterday.

As the first front moves toward New England today, skies will be partly cloudy with lingering sunshine. In the afternoon, mostly sunny weather will prevail in the region. The likelihood of sudden fallout west and north of Boston is very low; The city needs to stay dry today.

The day will start out in the mid-50s for the morning commute and then steadily climb into the upper 60s. There may be a few spots reaching 70 shortly before the sun sets at exactly 4:30 pm today.

As the front passes today, we will see winds change from the northwest to 10 miles per hour. It may not be as windy as yesterday, but there will still be a few noticeable gusts reaching 15 to 20 mph.

With the shift to a northwest flow today, Northern New England may not warm up as much, instead remaining in the mid-to-upper 50s this afternoon whether the sun comes out or not.

Another cold snap will bring stronger cool air to New England heading into the weekend. This will bring a strong high pressure system and, along with drier weather, will cause daily highs to drop into the 50s. The best chance for a quick fallout may be in parts of Central and Northern Vermont and New Hampshire. But overall, the overall risk associated with any wet activity remains low.

Is there a chance of rain eventually?

The best chance we have for widespread precipitation in a while will be late Sunday into Monday. It might not be much, but it’s our best chance to see more than trace amounts of precipitation. Ultimately this will depend on how much moisture the system can pull from the south before the front passes.

Southern New England: As a front, a mixture of sun and clouds throughout the day makes the weather a bit confusing. Temperatures are cooler but still mild with highs in the 60s. The chances of it raining quickly from a one or two spot shower are slim, but very unlikely.

Western Mass.: There are some more clouds around today and there is a chance of quick showers. Highs in the upper 50s across Berkshire County with a good chance to reach 70 in the Pioneer Valley. It will depend on how much sunlight it gets as it transitions to a northwesterly flow.

Cape and Islands: Partly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid-60s across the peninsula and islands. Winds remain in place to around 10 to 15 mph and the area likely remains dry as the front passes through today.

Northern New England: Partly cloudy today with light showers or showers as the front arrives early enough to keep the clouds around meaning today’s highs will plateau in the mid to upper 50s, especially as cooler air arrives earlier in the day.

High temperatures will be cooler than yesterday but will still be above average across much of Southern and Central New England.Boston Globe
