24-year-old man arrested on murder charges after woman stabbed to death in Manhattan on Tuesday

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – A man has been arrested in connection with first-degree murder after a man died from stab wounds in southwest Manhattan Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The fatal victim was identified by Riley County Police officials as Tabatha Deer, 24, of Mountain Home, Ark.

A stabbing was reported at around 11:36 a.m. on Tuesday. in the 3000 block of Arbor Drive in Manhattan.

Deer was taken by ambulance to Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan and then flown to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Riley County Police officials said.

Authorities said Deer died after being transferred to Stormont Vail.

The suspect in the case was identified as Hunter Logan Smith, 24, of Manhattan.

Smith was taken into custody at the scene of the stabbing around 11:51 a.m. Tuesday, then transported to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment of his injuries, authorities said.

Riley County Police officials tell 13 NEWS that Smith remained in Stormont Vail Wednesday morning but was scheduled to be released later in the day “unless there is a major change in his health condition.”

Smith is expected to be booked into the Riley County Jail later Wednesday after being released from the hospital, authorities said.

Smith was formally arrested in connection with first-degree murder and was given $1 million bail, authorities said.

Tuesday’s murder was the second homicide reported in Manhattan in the past three weeks.

Don Stovall, 58, was shot to death around 8:45 pm on Saturday, October 19, in the 700 block of N. 4th Street on the east side of Manhattan. Two people were arrested In connection with Stovall’s death.

Additional details about the latest homicide in Manhattan were not available Wednesday afternoon.
