Colorado Springs voters overwhelmingly approved Ballot Issue 2C, which would extend taxes for road improvements

A sales tax aimed at improving roads in Colorado Springs is scheduled to continue for the next 10 years.

An overwhelming 73 percent of voters approved continuing the 5.7-cent sales tax for every $10 spent in Colorado Springs. This is as of the last count released just before midnight Tuesday. 5 November.

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade heavily defended the measure that would extend the sunset date to 2035 instead of next year.

“I want to offer you my deepest and most sincere thanks for passing ballot measure 2C,” Mobolade said in an emailed statement. “This proven program means smoother, safer roads to work, schools, hospitals, military installations, your favorite restaurants, and our homes.”

Since the creation of the 2C sales tax in 2015, funds have resulted in the repair of more than 2,677 miles of roads, by city.

“We know this program works,” Mebolade said at an election night vigil party. “The numbers show incredible results. “We reduced pothole and damage claims against the city by 80 percent.”
