Judge holds hearing for Akron murder suspect representing himself

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) – The judge presiding over the trial of the 33-year-old man accused of killing an Akron mother in July 2022 took the case Tuesday afternoon.

Quinton Nixon represents himself.

Nixon’s trial began on October 1 before Judge Christine Croce.

The trial was adjourned for several weeks and resumed on November 5, with both sides presenting their closing arguments.

Judge Croce ordered Nixon to appear in court again Wednesday morning. It is not clear whether the decision will be read at that time.

Akron police said Nixon killed 34-year-old Toni Westover on July 25, 2022.

Westover was found shot to death at a home in the 2200 block of Maryland Ave. in Akron.

According to police, after Westover’s murder, detectives worked tirelessly to follow leads, conduct interviews and examine evidence.

Nixon was arrested in August 2022.

Westover, a medical assistant, leaves behind a seven-year-old daughter.

“She loved being a mother,” her sister said. “His daughter was his world.”
