One dead in shooting involving MP after threatening to kill co-workers

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) — One person is dead following a deputy-involved shooting in Lindale.

According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a threatening call at a business in Lindale around 12:50 a.m. Tuesday. The caller said Jonathan Layton had recently been terminated and had made threats that he would “go home and come back.” The job is to kill them.”

Layton had left work before authorities arrived and a description of his vehicle was released. A responding deputy noticed the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on US 69 before receiving the information.

Authorities attempted to contact Layton in the 13200 block of CR 4109 east of Lindale and found his vehicle in the front yard of a residence.

“When deputies attempted to contact Layton at the residence, Layton turned away with a handgun pointed at them. Smith County authorities said one of the deputies fired his duty weapon at Layton, disabling him.

Medical personnel were called to the scene and took Layton to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Smith said the two deputies did what they were trained to do and will take a few days off to meet with their attorneys. An autopsy was ordered and Texas Rangers responded to the scene to conduct the investigation as required by Smith County Sheriff’s protocol.
