US elections: Results so far in maps and charts | US News

With more than 120 million votes counted, we are one step closer to knowing whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will replace Joe Biden in January.

Mr. Trump’s victories in the southern battleground states of Georgia and North Carolina – each worth 16 electoral votes – significantly narrowed Ms. Harris’ paths to victory.

He must win at least three of the five remaining battleground states (Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Nevada) to capture the presidency. Mr. Trump can now win with just two big ones.

Exit polling tells a story of America’s growing divide along party lines and the biggest issues facing the country, but less so in terms of demographic indicators like race and age.

Black and Latino voters supported Republicans at higher rates than in recent elections, while white voters and older voters (especially women) moved closer to Democrats.

The results in the remaining five battleground states and several other states are still outstanding.

Points in the states have not been announced yet

It’s important not to get carried away by the great leaders in the battleground states. In 2020, Trump received almost 400,000 votes in Georgia with 75% of the votes counted, but he ultimately lost. A similar situation happened to Biden in North Carolina.

But results from counties that have finished voting are heavily in favor of Mr. Trump; In 90% of the counties that have counted more than 95% of the votes so far, the votes are tilted towards Trump.

So far, we know of 26 districts that switched parties from the 2020 results. Twenty-three of them preferred Mr. Trump. Eight of those counties had voted Democratic in every election since at least 2000.

What does the exit poll tell us?

The election found the American public in an unforgiving mood.

The exit poll, carried out by Sky’s US partner NBC News, points to a country unhappy with its current situation, although it is still very divided on what the most important issues are.

Two-thirds of people think that the state of the country’s economy is neither very good nor bad.

Three-quarters of exit poll respondents said they were dissatisfied or angry with the way things were going in the country.

Nearly 60% expressed disapproval of the Supreme Court, while a similar number disapproved of the way Joe Biden is handling the presidency.

Harris voters thought “democracy” was the most important issue behind their vote, while Trump supporters rated the economy and immigration higher. Only a few people on either side made up their minds last month.

The exit poll also tells us that Mr. Trump has lost support from some of his most trusted groups. Voters over 65 supported Democrats this year, choosing Trump in the last two elections. He also lost support among white women and non-college-educated white people.

Harris’s lead in the polls has also diminished among some of the groups that most enthusiastically support Biden. There was a steep decline among Latino voters, as well as among the youngest voters and women.

In a year when abortion was on the ballot in all 10 states, these groups were especially expected to be among Harris’ strongest voting groups.

How are the abortion votes going?

In addition to the election, voters in 10 states also voted on whether the right to abortion should be included and protected in local constitutions.

Voters in New York, Maryland and Colorado voted to establish this right.

However, voters in Florida narrowly reached the 60% threshold needed to pass the measure, but a majority of the public supported it. It was the only state that needed more than a simple majority to pass.

According to the exit poll, 92% of Democratic voters nationwide believe abortion should be legal, compared to 38% of Republicans.

Voters had disagreements with the former president on immigration as well as abortion; 56% of people believed that undocumented immigrants should be given a chance to apply for legal status.

What about the Senate and the House of Representatives?

Democrats lost control of the Senate. They won a 51/49 majority in the election and have lost two seats to Republicans so far in Ohio and West Virginia.

Defending the majority was always going to be difficult this year. The seats that increased were seats the party won in the 2018 “blue wave” midterm elections six years ago, in the middle of Trump’s first term.

Republicans also made a gain in the House of Representatives, where they already have a majority. In case of equality in the electoral board, the Parliament will elect the president.
