Early voting results show a majority of voters support Liberty Hill’s home rule requirement

Posted November 5 at 20:10

Early election results are clear 68.46% of voters are in favor of the City of Liberty Hill adopting its first local government charter.

In early voting, the proposal received 1,120 votes in favor and 516 votes against.

Setup

A special election has been called for this November for Liberty Hill voters to weigh in on whether the city should become a self-governing city, according to a previous announcement. Community Impact reporting.

Liberty Hill is currently a common law city, meaning the city is limited by state law.

Liberty Hill City Manager Paul Brandenburg says once cities reach a population of 5,000 or more, they become eligible to implement their own charters, which are very similar to their constitutions. I told you before this autumn. About two years ago, a state demographer estimated the city’s population at 6,801, he said.

If approved, the charter would make several changes to the city council, including adding a sixth council member and allowing the mayor to vote.

If the charter is adopted, the sixth council member will likely be voted in during elections in May. The Charter may be brought forward for review every three years or through a public petition, Brandenburg said Community Impact.
