Understanding AI Security

To understand the importance of AI security, it is important to consider its historical background. The origins of concerns about AI safety can be traced back to the mid-20s.This century, in the early days of artificial intelligence research. Pioneers such as Alan Turing explored the ethical implications of creating intelligent machines, setting the stage for ongoing debates about the risks and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, optimism about the potential of artificial intelligence was high, but technical difficulties slowed development. As a result, security concerns took a backseat. The resurgence of interest in artificial intelligence in the 1980s and 1990s led to a renewed focus on security issues. However, the need for ethical rules did not become clear until the 21st century, when artificial intelligence technologies became widespread in society.

Organizations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Future of Life Institute, and the Artificial Intelligence Partnership have emerged to create ethical frameworks for responsible AI development. Since the 2010s, governments, research institutions and industry stakeholders have also begun to address concerns about artificial intelligence security with various initiatives. Today, AI safety is a critical area of ​​research and development where efforts continue to focus on ensuring the ethical dissemination of AI technologies across various sectors.

Latest Legislative Developments

In June 2023, the European Union took steps towards AI security by enacting the EU Artificial Intelligence Law.1 A regulatory framework designed to promote ethics for trustworthy AI. This law emphasizes security, accountability, and transparency in artificial intelligence technologies. The European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence has developed principles to guide the responsible use of AI, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for governance in this area.2

The Biden-Harris administration has taken important steps to improve AI security in the United States. On October 30, 2023, an executive order was issued highlighting the establishment of standards and frameworks for the safe deployment of AI technologies.3 This initiative aims to promote transparency and accountability in AI development.

In line with this effort, the Artificial Intelligence Security Institute Consortium (AISIC) was launched on February 8, 2024, under the leadership of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The consortium includes more than 200 leading AI stakeholders and aims to foster collaboration between government agencies, industry leaders, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to tackle AI security challenges. Its goals include promoting ethical use of AI, reducing bias, and increasing the reliability and transparency of AI systems.

In November 2023, the UK government established the AI ​​Security Institute to improve the security and reliability of AI technologies. This initiative aims to foster collaboration between government, industry and academia to develop artificial intelligence systems that prioritize security and ethical considerations. The United States and the United Kingdom together announced a partnership to advance AI security by focusing on the research, development and implementation of technologies that prioritize security, accountability and transparency.4

With governments around the world introducing regulations regarding AI, organizations need to stay informed about compliance requirements. Adhering to legal frameworks such as the EU AI Law and guidelines established by the AI ​​Safety Institute5—will be vital for organizations leveraging AI in customer experience automation. Compliance not only reduces legal risk, but also increases customer trust.
