Mexican Navy seized 3.6 tons of cocaine from a boat on the Pacific coast

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican Navy said Tuesday it seized 3.6 tons of cocaine from a Pacific coast boat that was spotted earlier this week about 153 miles (246 kilometers) off the resort town of Acapulco.

Navy ships arrived to intercept the boat carrying 102 packages full of cocaine.

The type of vehicle known as “fast boats” was powered by two outboard motors and appeared to be a low-profile, semi-submersible craft designed to make it difficult to detect.

The Navy detained nine crew members on the ship, six of whom were foreigners. The Navy did not specify their nationalities, but most of the boats off the coast of Mexico have Colombian or Venezuelan crew.

Cocaine is produced in South America and usually shipped via Pacific or reaching the US market from the Caribbean.
