XL bully put down after 10-year-old girl dies in fatal attack by family pet dog

The XL bully dog that fatally attacked a 10-year-old girl was neutralized.

Savannah Bentham, from Malton, North Yorkshire, was attacked by her family’s pet dog at her home on Friday.

On Tuesday, the dog was identified as an XL bully and was euthanized by a vet, North Yorkshire Police said in a statement.

Police said the dog had been with the family for four years and had a Certificate of Exemption under the new legislation. He was also neutered.

Police added that an autopsy will be performed on the dog to help determine if there are any medical factors.

In a statement released by North Yorkshire Police on Monday, her family said: “We are completely shocked and devastated by what happened to Savannah.

“We can’t believe we lost our wonderful daughter that we loved so much.

“We thank everyone for their support and kindness as we try to come to terms with our loss.

“We ask that our family’s privacy be respected as we mourn the loss of Savannah.”

Police were called to the scene by Yorkshire Ambulance Service at around 4.15pm on Friday.

Despite all the efforts of paramedics and citizens who came to the aid of the family, Savannah died at the scene.

An investigation into what happened is ongoing and police said part of the investigation was the dog’s behavior to try to find out why it attacked.

Police say all indications so far are that the incident was out of character and that the girl and the pet had a close, loving relationship.

The force said the dog would be destroyed.

An autopsy was performed on Sunday and the investigation will begin in the coming days.

North Yorkshire Police said: “We would once again urge people not to speculate about the incident and to respect the family’s wish for privacy so they can grieve peacefully.”
