The basic stance of every U.S. Senate election candidate on your ballot

One of two races on the ballot for all Virginians is the U.S. Senate election. If you’re trying to understand the main policy points for both candidates, here’s a brief overview of Tim Kaine and his opponent, Hung Cao.

On the economic side of his running platform, Kaine highlights his long career supporting Virginia workers and families. He now says he’s pushing to raise the federal minimum wage to $17 an hour.

Kaine, Roe v. Following Wade’s ouster, she introduced the Reproductive Freedom for All Act and worked to block restrictions on reproductive health in Virginia. Kaine says she’s still trying to stand up to give women across the country the ability to “make their own health decisions without interference from out-of-touch politicians.”

Kaine is a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and says he pushes for quality, affordable health care for all Virginians. He does this by working in committee to lower costs and preserve health insurance.

Hung Cao is a retired Navy captain running as the Republican challenger against Kaine. His campaign website It also includes the economy, healthcare and a tough stance against abortion.

Their economic views revolve around energy and manufacturing. He says America should be energy independent and wants to increase investments in American-made energy. Cao said China is an existential threat to the United States and that he wants to protect American businesses from unfair trade practices.

Cao’s health plan details a reassessment of dependence on ingredients from China and India. He wants the medical industry to be allowed to innovate and compete to reduce costs.

He also says that he is pro-life, opposes abortion and defends the right to life as one of the biggest differences between him and his opponent. Cao says Kaine’s stance is out of touch and out of touch with most Virginians.
