Where is John Sweeney now?

John Sweeney is currently serving multiple life sentences for the attempted murder of Delia Balmer and the murders of Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields. He had already murdered Melissa Halstead in Amsterdam when he began a relationship with Delia Balmer. After attempting to kill Delia with an ax outside her London flat in 1994, he escaped and was eventually arrested in 2001. Sweeney killed Paula Fields while she was on the run.

according to Liverpool EchoSweeney was born in Kirkdale in 1956 and trained as a carpenter and joiner after leaving school. He married a woman named Anne Bramley in 1976, and the couple later had two children. A tumultuous marriage followed and the couple divorced in 1979, but later reconciled and remarried in 1981.

In 1982 Anne felt her relationship was threatened and divorced Sweeney once again, and he moved to London. While living in the capital, Sweeney met former model photographer Melissa Halstead, 33. Melissa was deported from England in 1988 and went to live in Amsterdam. Her family reported losing contact with her after her deportation, and Melissa’s dismembered remains were found in the Westersingel canal near Rotterdam in 1990.

Melissa’s remains were not officially identified until 2008, when her family in Ohio provided matching DNA samples. Sweeney began a relationship with nurse Delia Balmer in 1991. When Delia tried to end their relationship, Sweeney broke into her home, tied her to the bed, and subjected her to a horrific four-day ordeal. He managed to escape and notify the police, but Sweeney was arrested and released on bail. The day after he was released on bail, he went straight to Delia’s flat and attacked her with an axe, cutting off one of her fingers and scarring her physically and emotionally for life.

He only stopped the attempt on his life after a neighbor heard about the incident and hit him with a baseball bat. After the attempted murder of Delia, Sweeney fled towards Europe. Sweeney was eventually caught in 2001, but he claimed another victim the year before he was captured. In 2000 he had befriended and begun a relationship with sex worker Paula Fields, and shortly afterwards her body was recovered from the Regent’s Canal, dismembered in the same manner as Melissa’s, missing her head and hands.

Following his arrest, police found violent and disturbing artwork in Sweeney’s London flat. This is said to include drawings of bound women and a woman believed to be Melissa. One area was covered in correction fluid, but experts managed to uncover writing underneath that read: “Melissa Halstead, born November 7, 1956. Died.”

Sweeney never revealed the whereabouts of Melissa or Paula’s missing body parts (their heads and hands were never found), and they remain in prison with no chance of parole.
