Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, which stepped up its campaign against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Sunday, urged Chandrababu Naidu and JD(U)’s Nitish Kumar to listen to the sentiments of Muslims on the issue.

The society said parties claiming to be secular in the NDA should move away from supporting this “dangerous” law.

Parliament’s Joint Committee is examining the controversial Foundation (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in August and was referred to a Joint Parliamentary panel after a heated debate; the government said the proposed law was not intended to interfere with the functioning of mosques and the Opposition described it as targeting Muslims and an attack on the Constitution.

The committee meetings saw tempers fly, with opposition members accusing the President of inviting different organisations, including those working for Hindu causes, that had nothing to do with the trust issues, and BJP members accusing their political rivals of deliberately disrupting the process.
