On a rainy Sunday, more than a hundred voters crowded around the Capitol Drive Voting Center building on Milwaukee’s north side, waiting to cast ballots in the Nov. 5 election.

“I know how resilient this community is, and I’m not surprised,” said the Rev. Gregory Lewis, director of Souls to the Polls. “This is the kind of energy that happens when people stand together. That’s what’s happening right now. People are focused and they’re standing together and they want to make sure their voices are heard.”

Election workers were waiting for more than 700 voters to vote at the center from noon to 4 p.m.

The center was one of five open venues Sunday, along with the American Serbian Hall. Zeidler Town HallGood Hope Library and Tippecanoe Library.

At the Capitol Drive Voting Center, some voters gathered under umbrellas and waited in line for about 45 minutes to vote under overcast skies.

“It’s a little boring, but it’s worth it. This is an important election, so I’m here to cast my vote,” said Jeff Thomas, one of the voters.

“My daughter is the reason I’m here. I’m trying to make sure I vote to prevent her rights from being taken away,” said Shelly Scott, who was riding the bus with her daughter in a stroller.

As of Sunday morning, the Milwaukee Elections Commission had received 102,080 ballots. More than 4,800 Milwaukee residents voted early yesterday. Compared to this point in the 2020 election cycle, Milwaukee’s early voting numbers are up 9% overall, according to MEC.
