Mary gained a reputation for passion, dedication and warmth

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA—Madine “Mary” McCurry is officially Health First’s longest-tenured employee, It celebrates its 61st anniversary on November 6. With over six decades of service, Mary has earned a reputation for passion, dedication, and warmth.

Mary began her career at Health First in 1963, just one year after Health First opened the doors of Cape Canaveral Hospital. Continuity of staff was rare in those early days.

“My first job was private duty, and I was referred to a nursing assistant role (now called a Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA) by one of the managers at the time. At the time, most of the nurses’ husbands were stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, so they only stayed for short periods of time, and hospital leaders were looking for someone to stay here longer,” Mary recalled.

It fulfilled this expectation and more.

Evening Care Assistant

Mary transitioned into the Patient Observer role in 2011 after serving as a CNA for 48 years. She moves between Health First’s four hospitals, bringing her wealth of experience and compassion to every interaction. “I keep an eye on patients throughout the night and call the nurses when necessary,” Mary explained.

His colleagues have great respect for him, recognizing his influence and dedication. Chinetia Brown, Patient Services Specialist at Cape Canaveral Hospital, describes Mary as “an extraordinary and dedicated Health First worker” and a true friend.

“When I see Mary early in the morning after the night shift is over, she still has a smile on her face and is never too tired to leave words of encouragement. He has helped make this company successful while positively impacting his colleagues and patients,” Brown said.

61 Years of Dedication

Lavana Scott, also a Patient Services Specialist at Cape Canaveral Hospital, echoes Mary’s unwavering dedication.

“Every day, he sets a standard of diligence and care that is an example to us all. Her dedication is evident in everything she does, whether she is confronting the complexities of patient care or mentoring new team members,” said Scott.

Jodi Stephens, Associate Development, added that Mary’s positive impact extends beyond her department.

“He is a wonderful person who has dedicated his life to helping our community and organization.”

Decades of Beautiful Memories

Mary’s journey was marked by many fond memories, including witnessing the development of Cape Canaveral Hospital.

“It used to be a tiny piece of land surrounded by water, and they said, ‘We’re building a hospital here.’ The hospital was small and everyone knew everyone’s name,” Mary recalled.

“One of my favorite memories was seeing a former administrator plant flowers around the hospital with his wife to make it look nice.”

Wellness Nurse Aide Laura Cornett adds: “Mary has definitely chosen the right field, where kindness and empathy are key to quality care. What a joy we are that Mary still brings her special touch to our patients!”
