Warhol’s paintings were stolen in ‘amateur’ robbery, 2 more works were damaged while escaping from the Dutch gallery

In the Netherlands, thieves opened the door of a building with explosives art gallery On Friday we set out with two rare screen prints by American pop artist Andy Warhol.

According to MPV Gallery owner Mark Peet Visser, the suspects left two other heavily damaged works on the street while fleeing.

Visser shared with the Associated Press that the suspects attempted to steal all four works from Warhol’s 1985 “Reigning Queens” series. Warhol portraits include: Queen Elizabeth II elizabeth Queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II of Denmark. Margrethe, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Ntombi Tfwala of Swaziland (now Eswatini).

In a phone interview with The Associated Press, Visser called the robbery “amateurish.” Visser explained that the entire robbery was recorded on security cameras.

He said: “The bombing was so bad that my whole building was destroyed and the shops nearby were also damaged. So they did that part of the job very well, very well actually. Then they ran to the car with the artworks and it turned out they wouldn’t fit in the car.”

“At that moment the works are being ripped out of the frames, and at the same time you know that they are damaged beyond repair, because it is impossible to remove them without damage,” Visser added.

Among the stolen portraits is Queen Elizabeth II. Elizabeth and Queen II While portraits of Margrethe were featured, damaged portraits of Queen Beatrix and Queen Ntombi Tfwala were left on the street.

Visser declined to estimate the value of the signed, numbered works, which he plans to display as a set. upcoming Amsterdam art fair.

Police are actively investigating this case and appealing for witnesses. Forensic experts examined the collapsed gallery on Friday.
