A 5.48-metre (18 ft) Australian crocodile that held the world record for the largest crocodile in captivity has died, a wildlife sanctuary said on Saturday. He was thought to be over 110 years old.

Marineland Melanesian Crocodile Habitat said in a statement on Facebook that Cassius, who weighs more than a ton, has been in deteriorating health since October 15.

“He was very old and believed to have lived beyond the years of a wild Croc,” according to a post from the organization, which is based on Green Island near the Queensland tourist town of Cairns.

“Cassius will be greatly missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”

The crocodiles have lived at the sanctuary since 1987 after being transported from the neighboring Northern Territory, where they are a key part of the region’s tourism industry, the group’s website said.

Saltwater crocodile Cassius held the Guinness World Records title as the world’s largest crocodile in captivity.

He received the title after the death of Lolong, a 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in) long Philippine crocodile, in 2013, according to Guinness.
